Alida Velea
Alida Velea was born in Slanic, a very small town in Romania. Having grown up surrounded by nature and old, traditional, and mystical stories, her orientation towards art has come naturally. With a background diploma in engineering, her decision to change fields and pursue fine arts was easy for her, but controversial for those around the artist. Few years later Alida Velea has also graduated Fine Arts at University of Hertfordshire (United Kingdom) with First Class Degree Diploma. The artist is interested in exploring her own cultural identity. She engages with social events and how they have an impact over us. Living in an era of huge technological evolution, her works can be seen as a contemporary representation of what she consider important to be remember and what is important to be conserved. Alida Velea approach painting mostly in a figurative style, which she consider part of her national identity. Sometimes she combines this classic approach with new technologies or mix mediums to create new and authentic works. Part of my work style is inspired by the Impressionist masters who made me love painting. The fragmentation of objects and spaces, she believes that came from Cubism, from great painters such as: Gris, Braque and Picasso. Many other contemporary artists also influenced her work: Julie Mehretu, who, through her works addresses political, social, and cultural themes, Victor Man - who approaches themes from his own biography and Alina Gherasim who express her experiences through collages and paintings. Alida Velea needs to translate the mental images, related to contemporary events and her feelings within, into forms that can transmit my intentions to others; her works are her experiments and represent the desire to convey messages to the world. Artist Statement: „My values represent the landmarks according to which I approach a subject that I want to present through art. They serve as an inner compass, and my way of expressing them has evolved with my growth in this field. I am part of a community of artists interested in exploring places, spaces, people, and objects. I try to be involved in presenting events and analyse how they continue to have an impact over us. As a part of the 'Feminine Frames' series, this work tells a story that millions of women may relate to. The series itself, if it is pro-feminism or against feminism, is a debate. I believe it to be a personal interpretation of significant stages that any woman may experience in life, regardless of their skin color or religious background. Each work has a single-word title that conveys a feeling with a noun. Whether the woman in the artwork wears a hat or not, and what the traditional model in the work expresses (inspired by traditional Romanian models), is left to the viewer's interpretation. Any feeling that the work can reveal, in any of us, must be considered a personal gain. As an artist, my goal is to connect the past with the present and inspire dialogue. I invite you to explore my work and join me in reflecting on the complexities of identity and our shared human experiences“. Alida Velea
